As it was his habit, he was sitting next to the window staring at the maize on his farm. This year the rains had been fair to him for he would have a large harvest. Today however, there was an emptiness in his eyes, a certain type of sorrow or was it regret? He turned to look at me and said, “Sit down my child.” So I knew we were about to get into the grandfather-granddaughter talk, but today it would be different. “It is only in Kenya where beggars beg using java cups and also the only country where the youth have lost respect for their elders; now they don’t remove hats to answer greetings, they only remove one earphone. Anyway, this is not about how perverse your sex-texting generation is but a secret I want you to know. Many years back I made a promise to myself that one day I will be a wealthy man. I fulfilled my promise but not how I had planned.

Many people have dreams, ambitions, a passion for something but the thing about life is that nothing good comes easy. 96% of the people in this world are employed. They work on a schedule created for them by their bosses. By this time you should have done this, at this time you should be working on this, then finish that. When saying it that’s when you realize that people do a lot of work than they think but console themselves because of the salary they will get at the end of the month. It may be an amount with many zeros or less zeros but as long as it makes you not sleep on an empty stomach you are okay with it.

How many people love their jobs? How many are working in a job related to what they studied for in college or campus? Most people just see an opportunity where they will get money and boom, they see as if they have hit the jackpot. All cause of money. So when they get the job they become happy, for the first days, months or even years. Put in all their effort, work as if there is no tomorrow but then they start getting tired. Prayers come in handy for they pray that Sunday comes quickly and never ends and for Monday to disappear from the calendar. But as usual, the salary consoles them. What if they could have followed the dreams that they had?

My child, when I was young I had a dream of being the best writer and receiving so many awards for it but I gave up on it cause someone told me it takes long for one to achieve his or her dreams. It’s not until now that I’ve come to the realization that whoever said that was wrong. For I was employed for 30 years all cause the salary gave me a good life and I didn’t have to struggle much. I however forgot that my dream would have taken me about 10 years for me to start seeing the fruits of my labor and by the fifteenth year I would have probably been a millionaire travelling all over the world for book tours. That dream is now dead. I am happy with what I have even though I would have led a happier life.” He paused for a minute and stared into my eyes then said,” Life is a maze, the path you choose leads you to the door you want. Do you want to be happy or happier, proud of yourself or totally proud? You may have a dream that seems lame but it can turn you to the wealthiest person. You may also have a great dream and it may turn you to a church mouse. It maybe that job you hate but then come to love or love then come to hate or even that dream you barely believed you could achieve that becomes your success. Whatever you choose to fulfill, ensure you succeed in it for even if it is not what you wanted, you will console yourself and say ‘I ACHIEVED SOMETHING’ then you will be at peace with yourself.”

A good piece of writing. Very encouraging

Bare truth but trying to earn from your dreams can be frustrating at times.

Great encouragement there. As said a person without dreams is like a bird without wings. One should never give up along the way of achieving ones dream(s)

Get going. Move forward. Aim High. Plan a takeoff. Don't just sit on the runway and hope someone will come along and push the airplane. It simply won't happen. Change your attitude and gain some altitude. Believe me, you'll love it up here.
